E Stickers

From 1981 onwards, enamel “E” plates were replaced by self-adhesive vinyl stickers, which allowed for a greater variety of styles and colours. Some of the stickers were brightly coloured as part of marketing campaigns. The stickers were either placed on the old enamel plates themselves or directly onto the lower portion of elongated bus stop flags. These vinyl stickers were in turn replaced by simple paper labels that were pasted in place. Today, plastic tiles are used for the same purpose. Illustrated below are an assortment of the stickers that followed on after the use of enamelled metal “E” plates ceased.

This particular type of stop flag was introduced in the early 1990s, and was replaced by the current style from the mid-’90s. It is unusual in that it is an “E3” flag (with space for three “E” stickers) with an E3 “boat” extension bolted underneath, which gives total capacity for up to six route labels. (Normally, the E6 capacity was achieved by attaching an E6 extension to a general flag.) This stop carries “E” stickers for Hillingdon area routes, but does not carry a “BP” (location) reference number underneath, although the contractor’s sticker stating Hillingdon 7813 is still attached to the spine.

Green Line

During the revamp of the Green Line network in the ’70s and ’80s route 726 was proposed for withdrawal. However, the majority of the route ran within Greater London, and London Transport decided to put the route out to tender and retain its operation within the London area, still retaining the established “Green Line” marketing name. The contract was won by Luton & District and the 726 ran daily between Dartford and Heathrow Airport via Bexley, Sidcup, Chislehurst, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Kingston, Hampton Court, Feltham and Hatton Cross. The route has since been progressively cut back to Bromley and more recently was curtailed at Croydon, and now remains as route X26 between Croydon and Heathrow Airport, rerouted away from Hampton Court. The 726 was the only Green Line route put out to tender by London Transport, and was the only route to have special vinyl “E” stickers made for it.

It is unfortuante that the Green Line network had sunk to such a sad state of affairs that it was necessary to add DAILY to indicate the 726’s operation.

Kingfisher
Kingfisher K10 MON-SAT

“Kingfisher” branded route K10 ran from Kingston to Staines via Thames Ditton, Hampton Court and Byfleet. It was a commercial venture of the late 1980s by Kingston Bus, one of the low-cost units of London Buses whose main purpose was to tender for London Transport contracts. The service was operated by Leyland National LS-type vehicles from Norbiton Garage [NB].

These specially-produced bus stop stickers were designed in a unique two-tone blue style, which loosely reflected the crest of the Royal Borough of Kingston in which the route started. They would only have been displayed at a handful of stops, as most of the route was outside London and served standard Department of Transport bus stop flags. The sticker is glossy self-adhesive plastic. Only a few of these stickers are known to survive.
