The text accompanying each sign is the seller’s description (complete with spelling errors and unorthodox punctuation). Details of shipping, pick-up or delivery have been omitted. Any added notes are in italics. If a sign is marked as unsold (with a strike through the price), it is generally because the condition did not warrant the seller’s starting bid, or the seller had it listed as for “Local pick-up only”.

'BUS STOP REQUEST' enamel sign

This is a genuine London transport sign so does have scratches and is a little rusty in the corners. The sign is double sidded and wedge shapped. It measures 45cm high - 39.5cm across ( plus the fixings which measure 7cm) and is 7cm thick tappering down to 1cm.

London Transport Request Bus Stop Flag
Offered for sale is this Request Bus Stop flag as used in the London Transport Central Area and the former Country Area. It measures approximately 18" x 16 " (46 x 39 cms), and is complete with the two bus stop mounting brackets.
There are three fairly significant chips in the enamel surface on one side of the flag (visible in the photograph), together with three or four smaller chips, and the underlying metal has been corroded where exposed to the elements when in use for its intended purpose, although the corrosion is not active. Rust has 'bled' onto the remaining enamel surface resulting in permanent staining.
On the reverse face (see separate photograph) there are three more minor chips in the enamel, but any surface corrosion is limited. In addition there is some minor edge chipping and consequent staining on both sides of the flag. However, having been stored in a dry environment since I acquired the sign some 30 years ago, no further deterioration has taken place.
Overall, I would describe this item as being in fair(ish) condition, having regard to its age, use and degree of exposure to the weather. Its sale is part of a wider set of disposals from my collection of transport books and memorabilia in preparation for a downsizing house move.

If anyone could give me a date for this sign I would be very grateful.
This item was hung up & on display in the office at a local auto-scrapyard for many many years and was only recently removed during refurbishment.
Im told that this particular sign is rare to find and is very collectable.
It would be very easy to hang this up as it only needs two bolts/nails to hang on to.
Buyer will not be disappointed.

December 2009
Genuine London Transport bus stop sign in vitreous enamel (that is like glass and fired in a kiln)
It is of the post-World War II "boat" type, being shaped like a boat viewed from above.
At least 40- 50 years old. Branded " Burnham London" on the end.
It has its original serial number on a plate screwed to the underside.
The original special London Transport fittings enable it to be mounted on a post or a wall using the two bolts protruding from the end: they are threaded at the ends and the necessary nuts are provided.
Despite its age there is no corrosion.
The enamel is good, seen in the flash photo above.
The reserve price reflects its rarity. It is just as removed from its original post. It was taken down in 1976 because the bureaucrats of the European Common Market in Brussels had decreed that only EEC-approved signs could be used, except in the Central Area of London.  Crazy.

Selling this sign on behalf of my Mum who bought it many years ago, to go in the garden to remind her of London. Sadly it never went up and has been in dry storage for over 30 years. It now needs to go.

The photo shown is the worst side of the sign by far, and the side is pretty good, just a few blemishes. There are no fixings with this sign.

You are bidding on an original vintage London Transport Bus Stop sign. It is made of metal and is enamelled. It is double sided (same design on both sides) as it once sat on top of a pole! I am unsure of its age but would take a guess at 1970s. It is rusty and stained in places. It also has some chips and dents to the enamel. However overall it is a lovely item and would look great on any interior or exterior wall! It measures 18" wide x 20.5" high. A great bit of London Transport history!

with space to take 3 e-plates each side. The enamel stop sign has a rust mark on one side - possibly stone chip damage, and some similar minor marks as can be seen in the photograph. Otherwise it is in good order and would clean up very well - it is still in the condition it was withdrawn in 31 years ago. It has the mounting bolts and nuts to fix it to a bus stop pole. It was made by Burnham of London and weighs 7kgs

London Transport request bus stop - NO RESERVE

Here we have the genuine traditional London Transport request bus stop flag, enamelled metal made by Burnham of London. This one is quite unusual having the "COMPULSORY STOP FOR BUSES TERMINATING HERE" sticker at the bottom, presumably the flag was erected as a request stop and latterly a route was changed so some journeys terminated at this point.

I have absolutely no idea where this flag came from, or how old it is. The photos below show the condition, it has a few dings and scrapes, particularly on the sticker but on the whole a nice piece to add to your collection.

Metal London Transport request (red) bus stop flag

This item is from the 1990s era, and was placed on posts to identify to drivers and passengers a bus stopping location. These 'temporary' flags were generally used whilst a bus stop was being reconstructed or on bus diversion routes where there were no normal bus stops situated.

It is in MINT condition.

London Transport Coach Stop Request Sign.
Enamelled metal
The 3 route numbers on both sides appear to be plastic coated stickers.
Overall there are signs of wear, a couple of chips and scratches here and there.
Approx size 20 ¾" x 18 ¼"

The route stickers are likely someone’s attempt to “dress up” the sign, as these three routes did not operate anywhere close to each other, and even if they had done so, they would have stopped at a combined Bus & Coach stop.

£205.00

September 2007
This auction is for a Coach Request Flag with E3 'e' plate runners in excellent condition with just a little edge chipping and usual surface wear. It is very rare to find flags for Green Line coaches for sale, and even more so when they have 'e' plate runners attached. This flag is a lovely example from a bygone era and would be a great way of displaying some prized 'e' plates. It has been in my collection for many years but space is forcing me to part with it. I doubt you will find a nicer example, and even more unlikely that one will have all the runners intact. Don't miss this opportunity!

Bought by me from a Cobham Museum open day approximately 30 years ago, this "boat" style (so called after its profile when viewed from the top) flag comes complete with the lugs that engage with the pole fittings.

The pictures show the two sides, each of which has rust marks consistent with many years in the open. The e plate racks are complete (I took two out to auction separately a few minutes ago). There is no ID plate on the bottom.

Large London transport enamel bus stop sign request

A large enamel bus and coach request sign. One side has BUS & COACH STOP REQUEST with a smaller sign at the bottom saying QUEUE OTHER SIDE, this has some damage where there is a screw hole. The other side has BUS & COACH STOP REQUEST and a space at the bottom to insert smaller E signs, the little sign inserted is not included just to show where they fit in. Burnham London is stamped on one side.

Measuring a total of 20.5" x 18" the sign is still nice and colourful with some chipping etc. and a few areas are a not so shiny but generally a nice large sign. You will need some way of hanging it if you want to put on a wall as there is no bracket.
