The 900-series bus routes (formerly known as Mobility Buses) were designed for those who find it difficult to use normal buses. They link major shopping areas or hospitals on various days of the week. The Mobility Bus network was introduced after the use of enamel “E” plates was discontinued, so the stops were marked with self-adhesive vinyl stickers which are approximately 5" (exactly 126mm) square. The “general” sign (ALL MOBILITY BUSES STOP HERE) was used at stops served by more than one route. The original stickers appear to be slightly darker (unless that is an effect due to ageing, and—unlike enamel “E” plates—the day of the week was pluralised. Unless noted otherwise, only a single journey was provided in each direction.
In autumn of 1984 Mk I Leyland National LS 454 was fitted with a wheelchair lift in the centre doorway for use on the Waltham Forest and Newham Boroughs Mobility Services to Walthamstow and Stratford Shopping Centres. The network was expanded in 1985 to include other areas of north and east London. The fleet was tripled in size with the addition of LS 356 and LS 396, both fitted with a wheelchair lift and improved chair clamps. LS 105 was similarly converted in the autumn of 1986. In the summer of 1987 nine further LSs (139, 156, 192, 202, 256, 290, 293, 308 and 320) were modified, three of them (LS 139/293/320) entering service from Peckham Garage from 27 July. By this point there were over 30 mobility routes. Three more (LS 156/256/308) went to Cricklewood on 30 July 1988. The remainder were sent on hire to Kentish Bus on 17 October 1989. Extensions to the Mobility Bus network in 1990 resulted in three 11.3-metre Nationals being acquired from Provincial operators. LSL 1 came from Southdown in 1990, followed by LSL 2 and 3 from Hastings & District the following year. With the increase in tendered services, the number of Nationals in Mobility service dropped to six in 1994 and three in 1995.
